Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a beautiful, non-invasive therapy with a deeply relaxing effect on the body and the mind. It is during this deeply relaxed state that healing can take place.

The treatment aims to restore function and to relieve pain and dysfunction. Craniosacral treatment improves whole-body health and performance.

Craniosacral therapy focusses on the natural rhythms in the body and balances the nervous system. The nervous system and the surrounding fluid system are the most subtle and most sensitive parts of your body.

Your therapist uses a gentle hands-on approach to listen to the body and to release tensions stored deep inside the tissues.

What is the craniosacral system?

The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid. It surrounds, protects and nourishes the brain and spinal cord (this includes the origin of spinal and cranial nerves among which the vagal nerve).

The central nervous system and the nervus vagus are heavily influenced by the craniosacral system. Consequently, normalizing the craniosacral system restores the nervous balance and vagal tone and this enhances the body’s ability to self-correct.

During a craniosacral therapy session the brain goes into a state of deep meditation.

Did you know?
Scientists have measured the activity of the brain during a craniosacral treatment. What they found were theta brain waves. This shows that the brain goes into a state of deep meditation. Besides meditation, theta waves are also associated with creativity and deep relaxation. When the brain is in this state healing of trauma can take place.

The fact that craniosacral therapy influences the nervous system directly makes it extremely effective in breaking the fight-flight stress response and in normalizing the vagal nerve tonus.

What is the craniosacral rhythm?

Cerebrospinal fluid is produced in ventricles (small open spaces) inside the brain. It moves through the skull, the spine and the whole body following a rhythm of 7 to 14 waves a minute.

Craniosacral therapy and the rhythm waves in the ocean are related!

Did you know?

The cerebrospinal fluid has the same composition as seawater! On top of that, the rhythm in which it moves through the body is similar to the waves rolling over the beach! Indeed, sometimes slow and peaceful, sometimes fast and powerful!

Can I try craniosacral therapy when I am healthy?

Of course you can! A regular checkup with a craniosacral therapist is a wonderful way to support health and vitality. The subtle character of craniosacral therapy makes it possible to find dysfunction at a very early stage. Every day the body is influenced by small (or bigger) stresses and strains. Craniosacral therapy is a great way to address them and prevent body tissues to tighten up. Craniosacral therapy prevents the body to become favorable for dysfunction or disease. Above all, it supports the body to express health and vitality.

A good massage aims at relaxing the muscles. A craniosacral therapist, on the contrary, focuses on the nervous system directly. Because of this, the effect appears faster, reaches deeper and stays longer.
